Huskies Effort Not Good Enough Against Nichols

New Hampton looked to bounce back from a disappointing double overtime loss this morning as they take the host, Nichols School, this evening. As the first period started, one could tell both teams played earlier in the day, neither team looked to have a ton of energy to create anything offensively. As the time ticked down in the period, the game looked as if it was going to stay tied at 0-0 after the first period of play. However, with ten seconds remaining in the period, Nichols took advantage of a power play, scoring to take a 1-0 lead over the Huskies after the first period of play. In the second period, the Huskies looked to be trying to do a little too much, causing more harm than good. Nichols was able to score twice more in the second period, to take a three goal lead over New Hampton, heading into the third period. The Huskies looked to score early in the third period to get back in the game. However, New Hampton continued to try and do too much, playing more as individuals, staying away from their normal game plan of getting pucks deep, working hard on the forecheck to create turnovers and offensive zone opportunities. Just over nine minutes into the period, Nichols scored again to take a 4-0 lead over the Huskies. New Hampton was able to create one bright spot before the end of the game, scoring a short-handed goal with two and a half minutes remaining in the game. Jack Ring picked off a pass in the Huskies defensive zone, skated down the ice on a 2-on-1 with Greg Peterson. After crossing the offensive zone blueline, Peterson drove the net hard, Ring faked a shot and sauced a nice pass right on Peterson stick for an empty net tap-in. Final score New Hampton 1 Nichols 4. The Huskies will try to forget about this game, get some rest and prepare to play St. Francis Prep tomorrow afternoon.
