Huskies Knock Off Brooks in OT!
The New Hampton Huskies had an early wake-up call this morning, taking on host team, Brooks School, at 9:00am in their second game of the tournament. New Hampton learned from their slow start yesterday and came out flying to start this morning’s game. The Huskies were forechecking hard, putting pressure on the Brooks defensemen, creating turnovers and getting shots to the net. Despite outshooting Brooks 18-6 in the first period, New Hampton went into the first intermission trailing, 1-0. In the second period, the Huskies continued to dominate the game, outshooting Brooks 13-2, but were unable to solve the Brooks goaltender. New Hampton remained down 1-0 after two periods of play. The third period started in similar fashion to the first two, with the Huskies all over Brooks. New Hampton created several scoring chances early on and were a couple of goalposts away from tying the game and taking the lead. The Huskies hard work and offensive zone pressure started to wear down Brooks, causing Brooks players to take a couple penalties. New Hampton earned a 5-on-3 power play midway through the period. A time where the Huskies looked to tie the game, a missed pass, resulted in Brooks scoring on a breakaway to put the Huskies down by two. Still on the power play and plenty of time left in the game, New Hampton coaches took another well timed timeout to settle the team down and refocus on the task at hand, using the time left on the power play to score. The Huskies came out strong from the time out, continuing to pound shots at the Brooks goaltender, but were still unable to find the back of the net. Finally, with three minutes left in the period, Cale DuBrul got New Hampton on the board. Duke Litwin got the puck to Steve Ardagna at the point, Ardagna pass across to DuBrul who fired a shot on the ice through a screen that found its way past the Brooks goaltender and into the far corner of the net. Off the ensuing faceoff, the Huskies got the puck deep and drew another penalty. This time, twenty seconds into the power play and with two minutes remaining in the game, Jake Dunlap and Isaac MacLeod set up Jack Ring backdoor, for the game tying, open net goal. The rest of the period went scoreless, sending the game to overtime, New Hampton’s third overtime game of the season. Three minutes into overtime, Ryan Mahlmeister won a puck battle in the Brooks zone, cycled the puck to Marcus Joughin who rolled off the boards near the harsh marks, beating a Brooks defenseman and fired a backhand shot from the slot through the Brooks goaltenders five-hole to win the game for the Huskies. Matt Sayles was solid in net, stopping 11 of the 13 shots he faced, including two breakaway saves. New Hampton will take on Hebron Academy at 5pm this evening, with a chance to play in the finals of the tournament on the line.
