Huskies Open Tournament With Over Berwick

New Hampton traveled down to North Andover, MA this evening for their opening game of the Brooks/Pingree Tournament against Berwick Academy. The Huskies, looking to bounce back from their tough loss against Phillips Exeter on Wednesday, did not start off well. New Hampton came out flat to start the game and Berwick was all over the Huskies in the first three minutes. After the slow start for the Huskies, the New Hampton coaches took a timeout to gather the team. The timeout seemed to wake the Huskies up and New Hampton started to put some good shifts together. Gradually, the Huskies started to take control of the game, working the puck down low in the offensive zone, creating some qualities scoring chances. Seven minutes into the period, Marcus Joughin stole the puck from the Berwick defensemen on the forecheck and found Isaac MacLeod all alone in the slot. MacLeod one-timed Joughin’s pass right between the Berwick goaltender’s legs to give New Hampton the lead. The rest of the period, the Huskies played well defensively, killing off two penalties to go into the first intermission up a goal. New Hampton came out strong to start the second period, adding to their lead when Steven Ardagna scored forty-seven seconds into the period. Ardagna’s goal was his first career goals as a Husky. After Ardagna’s goal, New Hampton spent most of the rest of the second period penalty killing. Berwick managed to score once on their four power plays to cut the Huskies lead to 2-1, after two periods of play. Only up a goal, New Hampton knew the third period needed to be their best if they wanted to win tonight. The Huskies came out flying in the third outshooting Berwick 15-2. Isaac MacLeod scored his second goal of the game nine minutes into the period to give New Hampton back their two goal lead. Duke Litwin iced the game with just over a minute left in the game, scoring in the empty net for his first career goal as a Husky. Lucas Brine played great in net, making several key saves in the second period and stopping 17 of the 18 shots he faced. New Hampton will look to build upon tonight’s effort tomorrow morning when they face tournament host, Brooks School.
