Huskies Couldn't Hang On Against Exeter

The New Hampton Huskies took on #7 ranked, Phillips Exeter Academy, this afternoon in their first home game of the regular season. The game started out well for the Huskies, controlling the pace of the game and putting pressure on Exeter early. Midway through the period, New Hampton’s pressure wore down Exeter and Cory Morris was set up in front of the net by Marcus Joughin and Isaac MacLeod. Morris buried the puck high to the glove side, giving New Hampton their first lead of the game. The Huskies lead did not last long however, Exeter scored less than thirty seconds later to knot the game at one. New Hampton stuck to their game plan, continuing to get pucks deep and put pressure on the Exeter defense. With about five minutes remaining in the period, Adam Shuchart kept a puck in the offensive zone that Cory Morris picked up and fired a shot on net. Isaac MacLeod found the bouncing rebound, corralled the puck and then beat the Exeter goalie to give the Huskies back a one goal lead. The rest of the period Matt Sayles held strong to help New Hampton maintain their one goal lead heading into the first intermission. The second period, Exeter came out strong and managed to tie the game five minutes into the period. Exeter continued to put pressure on the Huskies the rest of the period, but the combination of goaltending by Matt Sayles and the penalty kill of New Hampton, the score remained tied, 2-2, after two periods of play. To start the third period, it was the Huskies turn to come out strong. New Hampton got back to what made them successful in the first period, getting pucks deep, working hard, finishing hits and getting pucks to the net. Five minutes into the third period, the Huskies were rewarded. Max Fleckenstein found the rebound off of Adam Shuchart’s shot and slide the puck back door to Davis Bone, for his first goal as a Husky. New Hampton continued to control the game for the next ten minutes, nearly scoring twice to extend their lead. With a little less than two minutes remaining, Exeter was able to tie the game on a shot from the point that looked to be going wide and took an unfortunate bounce off a player in front to find the back of the net. Less than thirty seconds later another bad bounce off the glass resulted in Exeter scoring to take the lead. The Huskies tried to find a way in the final minute and a half to tie the game but were unable to do so. Some bad luck in the final two minutes resulted in a disappointing end for New Hampton, in a game they battled extremely hard to win. The Huskies will look to take the positives out of tonight’s effort and get ready for the Brooks/Pingree Tournament this weekend, before heading on a holiday break.
