Huskies Comeback to Defeat Andover 5-4 in OT!

New Hampton traveled to Andover, MA to play their fifth straight road game to start the season. There have been no easy games for the Huskies this year and tonight’s matchup against the undefeated Philips Andover Academy will be no different. The game started out at a fast past with back and forth action from both teams. By getting the puck deep and working hard on the cycle, New Hampton started to build momentum. The Huskies hard work forced Andover to take an early penalty, putting New Hampton on their first man advantage of the game. On the power play, Jake Dunlap broke the puck up to Isaac MacLeod at the red line. MacLeod chipped the put to a streaking Jack Ring. Ring picked up the puck just outside the offensive zone blue line, cut across the blue line, around an Andover defender, before ripping a shot back the other way beating the Andover goaltender and putting New Hampton up by one. The Huskies lead did not last long, as Andover tied the game three minutes later. The rest of the period saw New Hampton get into a little bit of penalty trouble, but they were able to stay tied after one period of play through their strong penalty kill effort. The second period saw back and forth action with both teams’ creating chances and trying to earn the go ahead goal. Seven minutes into the period, while shorthanded, Marcus Joughin scored his first goal as a Husky. Joughin stole the puck from an Andover defenseman while on the forecheck, walked around the next and fired a shot, short side top shelf. New Hampton’s lead once again only lasted about three minutes before Andover was able to score and tie the game again. The remaining ten minutes of play saw several big saves from Lucas Brine and the Andover goalkeeper to keep both teams locked at two after two periods of play. Andover started the third period a little stronger than New Hampton, scoring seven minutes into the period and then again just before the thirteen minute mark, taking a two goal lead with five minutes away. The second Andover goal of the period lit a fire under the Huskies and New Hampton scored twice in the next two minutes to tie the game at four. Marcus Joughin batted a rebound home off of Quinn McClelland’s shot for his second of the game, cutting Andover’s lead to one. Just over a minute later, the hard work of Marcus Joughin and Isaac MacLeod caused a scrum in front of the Andover net, allowing Cory Morris to skate in and knock the puck past the Andover goaltender, tying the game at four. Neither team scored in the remaining minutes of the period, leaving the game tied 4-4, after three periods of play, sending the game to a sudden death overtime. With less than a minute remaining in overtime, Steven Ardagna broke the puck out to Marcus Joughin who preceded to skate the puck end to end, cut across the blue line and then find Cory Morris for a wide open net. Morris one-timed the perfect pass from Joughin into the open net to give New Hampton a well needed and deserved victory. Lucas Brine was great in net for the Huskies stopping 27 of the 31 shots he faced. New Hampton will look to build of their victory against Phillip’s Andover as they prepare for their first regular season home game, against Phillips Exeter.
