Late Comeback Not Enough Against Kent

New Hampton play their second game of the weekend this afternoon against another talented team from Connecticut, Kent School. The Huskies will be looking to bounce back after the disappointing third period last game, that lead to New Hampton tying Brunswick. Things did not start out well for the Huskies this afternoon, when Kent capitalized off of a New Hampton defensive zone miscue, just thirty-five seconds into the game. For the next eight minutes, Kent controlled the play, eventually leading to a power play goal, putting the Huskies down by two. After Kent’s second goal, New Hampton settled down and started to play good hockey, getting pucks deep and creating offensive off of the cycle. If it were not for some big saves by Kent’s goaltender, the Huskies could have tied the game or at the very least, cut Kent’s lead in half before the end of the period. New Hampton started off the second period strong, putting Kent back on their heels, controlling the pace of the game. However, a couple penalties by New Hampton led to Kent taking a three goal lead, nine minutes into the period. The rest of the period saw the Huskies continue to dominate the play, but they were unable to solve the riddle of the Kent goaltender. Down by three at the start of the third period, New Hampton came out flying trying to get back into the game. Six minutes into the period, Cory Morris scored his fourth of the season, after being set up by the hard work of Isaac MacLeod and Marcus Joughin. Four minutes later, it was Isaac MacLeod’s turn to score his fourth goal of the season, bringing the Huskies within one. Will Hilfiker and Quinn McClelland assisted on the play, to earn their first points as Huskies. After two goals by New Hampton, it looked like it was only a matter of time before the Huskies tied the game. However, a questionable offensive zone penalty called on New Hampton lead to a power play goal for Kent with seven minutes remaining in the game. Kent’s goal did not phase the Huskies, they continued to work hard, determined to tie the game. With four minutes remaining, New Hampton hard work earned them a power play. The Huskies pulled their goalie to make it a six against four power playing, looking to cut Kent’s lead to one. After nearly scoring, a bad bounce allowed Kent to gain control of the puck and score in the open net. Despite battling hard to comeback in the second and third period, and out shooting Kent 38-32 in the game, New Hampton fell to Kent, 5-2. Matt Sayles was strong in net for the Huskies stopping 28 of the 32 shots he faced. New Hampton will look to rebound on Wednesday, December 5th as they travel to play rival, Tilton School, with all important Lakes Region points on the line.
