Cougars run Huskies off the field

James Pinkham
After a hard fought and exhausting game against Exeter, your New Hampton Huskies took to Kennedy field for a battle with perenniall junior boarding school power, Cardigan Mountain. With several Cardigan alumni in the rank of current New Hampton students and faculty, this is always a fun game for people to reconnect. The joy stops at the sideline though as it was all business heading to the opening face-off. Matt '19 continued to show growth in his draws but came up against a player who showed great poise and talent. This put New Hampton on the defensive early and often and despite solid early play, Cardigan's patience proved it's virtue as they waited for quality scoring opportunities and capitalized. When we did make a stop on the defensive end, our achilles heel reared it's ugly head as the progress we made in the transiiton game on Saturday was not to be seen on this day. Forcing our defense and goalie into extra duty did them no favors and the Cardigan goals started to pile up heading into the half. The Huskies kept their cool and avoided the big penalty that hurt us against Exeter and played sound defense as both teams continued to battle despite the scoreboard. The third quarter was some of the best lacrosse this team has played as they held Caridgan to a single goal. However, tired legs slowed our defense and the Cougars put us away with a big fourth quarter push.
Some individual efforts of note, Mason '19 and Seth '19 played an excellent defensive game and did a great job staying with their mark through motion based offensvie sets. Defensively, J.R. '18 (Cardigan class of '14) and Will '21 each did a good job with initial checks and Kyle '20 impressed in the midfield. We look to recoup, work on the necessary plays, and get back to the defending Kennedy Field Wednesday when Dublin comes to town to renew our matchups.
