Huskies blank Cushing Academy 4-0

New Hampton was solid on defense through 7 innings against Cushing Academy.
The Huskies got on the board in the first inning after stringing together 3 singles by Maddie Willingham, Maryellen Leach, and Zola Braswell. They were able to hold onto a 1-0 lead after shutting down Cushing’s first three batters.

The second inning went scoreless with pitchers on both sides dominating on the mound. New Hampton bats came back alive in the top of the third with singles by Savannah Norcross, Leach and an RBI double from Braswell, increasing the lead 3-0.

New Hampton had an impressive showing in the field in the bottom of the third inning, with Willingham making a split-stretch at first to ensure out number one on the throw from Maddie Crowley-Cahill at 3rd base. This was followed up by Braswell throwing out a runner attempting to steal 2nd base immediately after a 3rd strike was thrown by Leach for outs two and three of the inning.

The Huskies added their final run in the fourth inning after Norcross hit a triple straight out to the center field fence, ultimately scoring on an RBI single by Willingham.

Both New Hampton and Cushing celebrated quick innings throughout the rest of the game, neither pitcher seeing more than 4 batters in innings five through seven. The Huskies came out on top 4-0.

Maryellen Leach had 12 strikeouts on the day and only let up 1 hit. Zola Braswell went 3-3 at the plate with two singles and a double. Maddie Willingham and Leach each added 2 singles of their own.

The Huskies will have a day off before hosting the Holderness Bulls on Monday.
