Huskies and Cougars play to draw

The young men of Cardigan Mountain School came down Rt. 4 to play the JVB squad for their first game of the season. With many players holding a lacrosse stick for the first time in a game, it promised to be an adventure. The weather was great and the sun shone on Kennedy Field as both teams warmed up and got loose.
Youth showed from the first whistle as the ball ended up on the ground quite a bit. Despite this, there were some great individual efforts in the first half. It was rewarding as a coaching staff to see the elements of what was taught in practice come through in the game. Despite the good elements, Cardigan took a 3-1 lead into the half and things looked bleak heading into the second half. Some slight adjustments, refreshers on transition play, and the effects of good conditioning changed our fortunes. Two quick goals, one on the power play, brought the Huskies right back into it and we headed into the 4th with an intriguing game on our hands! Despite a few dropped passes, the Huskies had an excellent opportunity to shoot the ball and it was stopped by an excellent save from the Cardigan goalie who was outstanding in net. Quickly turning the ball away and to our side of the field, our defense held strong and stopped the last second Cardigan shot to secure the 5-5 finish.
There has been growth and learning by the JVB squad and they will conitnue to learn as they look ahead to their next game.
