Tentative Second Period Cost Huskies

Despite it being Head Holiday and everyone at New Hampton having the day off, the Huskies Men’s Hockey Team had work to do. New Hampton traveled south to Massachusetts, to take on Dexter School, a team the Huskies has had great battles with the past couple years. New Hampton came ready to play, scoring just two minutes into the game. Joe Dunlap made a nice back door pass to set up Lynden Breen’s goal. The Huskies lead did not last long however, as Dexter scored twice in the next six minutes to take the lead. A minute and a half later, New Hampton answered right back when Bradley Shaw buried a rebound off of Michael Ardagna’s shot. Three minutes later, Dexter scored again to take back the lead. The final five minutes of the period, things settled down a bit on both side and neither team scored, leaving the Huskies down 3-2 after the first period of play. In the second period, Dexter took control of the game putting pressure on New Hampton, scoring two times to increase their lead to three. After Dexter’s fifth goal, the Huskies took a timeout to settle things out. The timeout seemed to work and New Hampton started to create some chances of their own in the final six minutes of the period, but were unable to score. The Huskies came out flying in the third and put pressure all over Dexter early on. If it were not for some great saves by the Dexter goaltender, New Hampton could have brought the score to within one, early on. Finally, eleven minutes into the period, Corey Morris scored off a rebound to bring the Huskies within two. Michael Kesselring and Zak Lanoue assisted on Morris’s goal. In the final seven minutes, New Hampton battled hard, created a couple power plays, but couldn’t find a way to beat the Dexter goaltender. Dexter added an empty netter in the last second to defeat the Huskies 6-3. New Hampton will look to bounce back on Wednesday afternoon, when they travel down to play Cushing Academy in their last regular game of the season.
