Shorthanded Huskies Battle To Defeat Vermont Academy

In a must win game for New Hampton, the Huskies will be without five players in tonight’s game versus Vermont Academy, due to illness and injury. A New Hampton victory will clinch the second seed and home ice advantage for Lakes Region Playoffs, while a loss could result in a third-place finish. The game started off with the New Hampton trying to score the first goal, putting the pressure on Vermont Academy. However, the Huskies eagerness to score did not result in any goals but two offensive zone penalties in the first six minutes. Allowing, Vermont Academy to take advantage of the Huskies being shorthanded, scoring to take the lead, just before the seven-minute mark. New Hampton responded strong after going down a goal, and about two minutes later, Michael Kane scored, after being set up by the hard work of Lukas Uhler and Zak Lanoue. The rest of the period was pretty quiet, neither team wanting to the let the other do much offensively. The first period of play ended with New Hampton and Vermont Academy tied at one. The second period was played similar to the end of the first, both teams playing solid defensive and not taking any offensive risk. After eighteen minutes of play in the second period, neither team scored, leaving both teams still knotted at one heading into the third period. The Huskies came out strong to start the third period, trying to show they were the better team and took control of the game. Just over seven minutes into the period, New Hampton’s hard work paid off, causing Vermont Academy to take a penalty, giving the Huskies a power play opportunity. A minute into the power play, New Hampton worked the puck around to Lukas Uhler in the corner. Uhler made a cross ice pass to Bradley Shaw sneaking in back door. Shaw caught the pass from Uhler and blasted a shot past the Vermont Academy goaltender, to put the Huskies in the lead. In the final ten minutes of the game, the strong defensive play of New Hampton along with the solid goaltending from Matt Sayles gave Vermont Academy no chance to tie the game. Final score: New Hampton 2 Vermont Academy 1. Matt Sayles was great in net, stopping 20 of the 21 shots that came his way. Tonight’s win, locked up the second seed in the Lakes Region for the Huskies and gave them home ice advantage in the semi-finals. New Hampton have a couple days to get healthy and prepare to travel to play against another Lakes Region opponent, Proctor Academy, on Saturday, February 16th
