Winning Streak Ends At 7 With Loss To Winchendon

New Hampton had nine wins and only one loss in the month of January, and are looking to kick February off with a win as they hit the road today, traveling to Winchendon, MA, to take on the Wapiti of Winchendon School. The Huskies and Winchendon, both came out ready to play with today’s game being important game for the in terms of Prep School Rankings. Each team aware of the others offensive potential, the game was played very tight defensively to start. Neither team game up many offensive chances and both Matt Sayles and the Winchendon goalie knocked away any shots that came there way during the first sixteen minutes. With less than a minute and a half remaining in the first period, a Winchendon player threw a puck towards the net that took an unfortunate bounce off a New Hampton defenseman’s skate and ricocheted in. Off the ensuing faceoff, Winchendon came down and scored again, taking a two-goal lead heading into the first intermission. Looking to get back into the game, the Huskies came out strong to start the second period. New Hampton dominated the play early on, creating several quality scoring chances, but were unable to find a way to beat the Winchendon goaltender. Just past the seven-minute mark, after the Huskies nearly scored, Winchendon was able to add to their lead, scoring after a dump-in took a crazy bounce and gave them an easy goal.  Thirty seconds later, Winchendon scored again to go up by four on the New Hampton. With one second remaining in the period, Winchendon put another nail in the Huskies coffin, scoring to take a five-goal lead heading into the final period. Despite being down by five, New Hampton never gave up and battled hard until the final buzzer. Lukas Uhler tipped Jackson Kyser’s shot, midway through the third period, to give the Huskies their only goal of the game. Andrew Engel played solid in net during the third period, stopping all eleven shots he faced. New Hampton will have to regroup quickly and get ready for the #4 ranked team in Prep School, Lakes Region Rival, Kimball Union Academy, tomorrow afternoon.
