Snakebitten Huskies Suffer OT Loss To Proctor

This evening, the New Hampton Huskies, face off against Lakes Region Rival, Proctor Academy. A win for the Huskies would help put distance between Proctor and New Hampton, in terms of the Lakes Region Playoffs picture. The game started out well for the Huskies, although they were not able to create many quality chances offensively, New Hampton was wearing down the Proctor defense, by keeping the play in the Proctor zone. Finally, at the eight-minute of the period, the relentless pressure of Patrick Kramer, Pat Roth and Cory Morris lead to Proctor turning the puck over at the blueline to James Hatzepetros. Hatzepetros skated the puck by a Proctor player before chipping the puck to Cory Morris on the half wall. Morris walked of the half wall and fired a shot short side that beat the Proctor goaltender, putting the Huskies up by one. The remaining eight minutes of the period, saw New Hampton continue to dominate the play, but they were unable to increase their lead. Despite outshooting Proctor 16-7 in the first period, New Hampton only had a one goal lead heading into the second period. The second period saw a more evenly played period. New Hampton was able to create several Grade “A” scoring chances, but narrowly missed adding to their lead each time. Just under seven minutes into the period, Proctor was able to capitalize off an unlikely bounce. A shot from the point by New Hampton, hit a New Hampton player skating towards the net and deflected to a Proctor player for a breakaway. On the breakaway, Proctor tied the game at one. The scored remained 1-1 for the rest of the period. In the third period, New Hampton took back control of the game, created several scoring chances, looking to score the go-ahead goal. Although, the Huskies fired twenty shots on the Proctor goaltender, they were unable to find a way to get the puck across the goal line. The scored remained tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime. Overtime has been New Hampton’s kryptonite the past two years, with a record of 0-7-4, in overtime games. Tonight’s game was no different, as a defensive zone turnover halfway through the five-minute overtime, lead to Proctor scoring to defeat New Hampton. The Huskies as well as Matt Sayles, who played solid in net stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced, deserved better tonight. New Hampton will need to find a way to rebound from this heartbreaking loss as they look to seek redemption on, Dexter School, a team they suffered two agonizing overtime losses against last year.
