Huskies Win With Dean Jacobson '68 In Attendance

The Huskies were able to get a couple days of practice in preparing for today’s game against Governor’s Academy due the cancelation of Thursday’s game against Kimball Union Academy as a result of the snow storm. The couple extra days also allowed for Lynden Breen and Zak Lanoue to get healthy and be back in the lineup for today’s game. New Hampton came out of the gate a little slow and the first eight or nine minutes was not their best hockey. The Huskies sloppy play led to a Governor’s power play goal ten minutes into the period. After giving up the power play goal to Governor’s, New Hampton woke up and started to control the play earning a power play of their own. On the power play, Bradley Shaw ripped a shot from the point past Michael Kane, who was screening the Governor’s goaltender, to tie the score at one. With a minute remaining in the period, the Huskies continued pressure resulted in another power play. This time Lynden Breen put home a nice pass from Bradley Shaw to give New Hampton the lead heading into the first intermission. The Huskies came out strong to start the second period, coming close to adding to their lead early in the period. Then at the three-and-a-half-minute mark, a New Hampton turnover lead to Governor’s tying the game at two. A minute later, Matt Sayles made a big save on a breakaway to keep the scored knotted at two. Just over eight minutes into the period, Bradley Shaw scored his second goal of the game, tipping Michael Kesselring’s shot into the back of the net. Seven minutes later on the power play, James Hatzepteros scored on a one-timer, setup by Thomas Albert. Cory Morris provided a great screen in front and the Governor’s goaltender never even saw Hatzepetros’s shot.  The last three minutes, New Hampton played solid defense to maintain their two-goal leading heading into the third period. In the third period, Matt Sayles continued his strong play in net and shut the door on any chances Governor’s created. Sayles stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced in the 4-2 win for the Huskies. New Hampton will now start to prepare for an important game against Lakes Region Rival, Holderness School, on Monday evening.
