Comeback Falls Just Short

This afternoon, New Hampton traveled down to Exeter, NH to take on Brunswick at Phillips Exeter Academy. The Huskies came out a little flat, giving up two goals early to give Brunswick a two-goal lead after six minutes of play. After the second goal, New Hampton retained its composure and started to play better hockey. The rest of the period was evenly played, both teams created chances, but neither team managed to score a goal. Leaving the Huskies down 2-0 after the first period of play. In the second period, the script seemed to flip with the Huskies coming out strong and taking the play to Brunswick. Just over five minutes in, Thomas Albert scored to bring the Huskies within one. Four minutes later, on a two-man advantage, a nice passing play set up Joe Dunlap for an open net goal to tie the game at two. Three minutes later, Brunswick took advantage of a New Hampton mistake and retook the lead, 3-2. A couple minutes later, the Huskies appeared to have tied the game when Lukas Uhler deflected Jackson Kyser’s shot past the Brunswick goaltender. However, the referee did not believe the puck crossed the goal line and the goal was called off. Thus, the second period finished with New Hampton still trailing by a goal. Brunswick scored four minutes into the third period to extend their lead. After going down by two goals, New Hampton took over the game and pounded shots at the Brunswick goaltender. Finally, with six minutes remaining in the game, a great play by Zak Lanoue set up Michael Kesselring for a goal. Only down by one, the Huskies battled hard to tie the game, coming extremely close in the final seconds, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Despite a strong effort, New Hampton lost their third game in a row. Matt Sayles played strong in net stopping 28 of 32 shots. The Huskies will regroup tonight, heading to watch Merrimack College play Northeastern University, before they take on another strong opponent in Gunnery tomorrow afternoon.
