Quick Start Not Enough

This afternoon the Huskies hosted Winchendon School, looking to bounce back after the tough overtime loss on Sunday. New Hampton came out of the gate flying, Michael Kesselring ripped a shot top corner, thirty seconds in, to put the Huskies up by one. New Hampton continued their strong play, drawing a penalty, two minutes later. A minute into the power play, Joe Dunlap sent Thomas Albert in all alone and he made a nifty move to beat the Winchendon goalie, giving New Hampton a 2-0 lead. Thirty seconds later, the Huskies hard work drew another penalty, giving New Hampton a chance to extend their lead. On the power play the Huskies came close a couple times but the puck wouldn’t seem to cross the goal line. As the Winchendon penalty expired, the player out of the box got a pass behind the New Hampton defensemen to go in on a breakaway and cut New Hampton’s lead in half. Thirty seconds later, Winchendon scored again to tie the game. The next four minutes saw back and forth action, with both teams playing offense and not a lot of defense. Then, at the twelve-minute mark, Winchendon scored again to take the lead. The crazy period continued with New Hampton scoring four minutes later to tie the game at three. Thirty seconds later, Winchendon answered New Hampton’s goal to take the lead back, before period ended. In the second period both team settled down and played better defensive hockey. Just over nine minutes in to the period, Winchendon scored again to go up by two. Lynden Breen responded less than a minute later for the Huskies, to cut Winchendon’s lead to one. At the end of the second period, the scored remained the same with the Huskies only down a goal headed into the third period. In the third period, Winchendon was the stronger team and added two more goals to defeat New Hampton 7-4. A tough loss for New Hampton at home, but they look to learn from it as they get ready for this weekend, playing two tough opponents in Brunswick on Saturday and Gunnery on Sunday.
