Undefeated Football Team to Host Undefeated Dexter

Kennedy Field will be a raucous setting on Saturday night when two undefeated football teams meet for Evergreen League supremacy. The New Hampton School Huskies (6-0) will host the Dexter School (6-0) of Brookline at 6 pm following a women’s varsity field hockey game between New Hampton and Brewster at 3:30 pm.

“I believe Dexter is more explosive offensively than Pingree,” said Huskies first-year coach Rick Marcella, “and that's saying something. Hopefully, we're more consistent defensively this week, but if they score 60, and we score 65, I'll take it.”

Dexter will feature a scrambling quarterback in Luke Cuneo, who is not a big player but a dual threat with his arm and feet. Coming off a 34-14 win over Portsmouth Abbey last week, Dexter also features some size on the line with offensive tackles James Hendren and Dan DiNicola, who have already committed to play at Boston College and UMass, respectively. The best common opponent between the two teams is Hyde-Connecticut. Dexter beat Hyde 25-14 while the Huskies knocked off the same squad 30-16.

But the Huskies carry a little momentum and rest into this one.

New Hampton is coming off a 54-48 victory before their bye week over previously undefeated Pingree on October 18 (Click here to see a photo slideshow from the game). An instant classic, it will be forever remembered by the Parents Weekend crowd as an emotional journey. The Huskies trailed 35-20 at halftime before a second-half outburst.

“It was composure, resilience, teamwork, and a belief in one another,” Marcella said. “Honestly, when we walked off the field at halftime down 35-20, our thoughts were ‘We've got 'em.’ Then we came out and shut them down in the third quarte and traded a few more punches in the fourth. And we knew that when we got the ball back with 2:10 left in the game tied at 48, we were going to score.”

Marcella leads a team that has been blessed with some standout performances from Elias Camacho ’14 (Canton, Massachusetts) and Matt Dean ’14 (Gilford, New Hampshire) in recent weeks. Camacho was electric with an offensive touchdown as well as another score on a 95-yard interception return. Meanwhile, Dean racked up 340 all-purpose yards (202 rushing, 138 return yards), and finished with three touchdowns against Pingree.

The Huskies will need to make some adjustments this week if they want to remain undefeated and keep their NEPSAC Bowl hopes alive.

“We need to turn the ball over less and pick up our defense,” said center/linebacker Eric Lauro ’14, who had 11 tackles in the Pingree game.

Marcella, who coached for many years at Bridgton Academy in Maine, is enjoying his first season in Central New Hampshire.

"What I appreciate most about coaching at New Hampton is the fact that the entire community wants us to be successful, and they support the program as if it were the only game in town,” Marcella said. “I'm fortunate to have inherited a group of young men that goes hard all the time, and plays so well together. That reflects directly upon the work ethic instilled by Ed Kiley and his staff during his tenure as head coach."
