Three Husky Football Players Named All-New England

Three New Hampton School football players recently received all-New England honors in NEPSAC Class C. Matt Dean ’14 (Gilford, New Hampshire), Elias Camacho ’14 (Canton, Massachusetts), and Ben Kumph ’14 (Georgetown, Massachusetts) were honored for their superb play as they led the Huskies to an 8-1 season, an undefeated run in the regular season, and an Evergreen League title.

All three players played both sides of the ball.

Kumph, a 6-foot-5 245-pound three-year starter for the Huskies, had 37 tackles from his defensive line position, but he was most dangerous on the offensive line, earning Evergreen League Lineman of the Year honors. He anchored an offensive line that amassed 2,385 yards in nine games.

“The week-to-week improvement in Ben Kumph was very evident,” said first-year coach Rick Marcella, who has over 30 years of experience coaching prep and college football. “The bigger the challenge, the better he played.”

A three-year starter at running back and linebacker, Dean was terrific in every way for the Huskies. He had 40 tackles in eight games at linebacker, finishing a dominating career in which he called the plays for the Huskies on defense. As a running back, he tallied 987 yards in eight games and scored 11 TDs. His 33-carry, 278-yard, 3-TD performance in a win over Dexter was one of the finest performances by a Husky player in recent years. Dean was named the Evergreen League Player of the Year for the second straight year and received the Sterndale Award at the team’s year-end banquet.

“There are better running backs and better linebackers in the league,” said Marcella, “but there was no one individual who performed at such a high level, week in and week out, in every phase of the game.”

Another All-Evergreen honoree, Camacho was electric throughout the season for the Huskies. He dazzled with a powerful north-south running approach, terrific hands as a wideout, spectacular punt returns, and ferocious tackling from his safety position. He rushed for 617 yards and 11 touchdowns on 53 carries and caught 13 passes for 305 yards and five TDs in eight games. He notched 1,272 yards on kickoff and punt returns and returned two punts for touchdowns. Still, his biggest contribution could have been on defense where he had 51 tackles and provided a speedy safety net for the Husky defense.

“Elias Camacho is as explosive as anyone I've ever coached,” said Marcella, who coached current NFL star Victor Cruz. “Simply put, he's a game changer.”

Football programs throughout the Northeast are recruiting all three players.
