Project Week Provides Perspective and Challenge

Will McCulloch
Project Week groups scattered into the depth of their essential questions last week, 25 different groups attempting to learn a little about themselves and the world around them. If Saturday's symposium provided one definititve confirmation it was that students and faculty engaged in something they were passionate about for a week. Whether they were touring Ireland, Washington DC, or the desert of Utah, or learning about building and carpentry on campus, students stepped out of their routine and thought about learning from a different angle.

"It was cathartic," said Peter Burgess '14, who restored a vintage wooden chair as part of The Business of Upcycling

One student's week of hands-on meditation was another student's opportunity to look under the hood of the snow sports industry. Cara Vogel '14 was part of the Mountain Mechanics project that visited some of New England's ski resorts. Though the group did spend time on the mountain on boards and skis, a considerable amount of time was spent learning about the complex pieces involved with running a winter resort.

"We learned that sponsorship was huge in running terrain parks," said Vogel, who visited a number of areas including Loon and Jay Peak. "We also learned that Snow Cats are leased so that you can have them for a certain amount of time, and we learned a little about snow patrol."

The Project Week pursuit took the look of a team or company engineering its way to produce or achieve. Each project tackled their own singular learning experience outside the classroom, but for some students the simple aspect of being part of a random group resonated.

"We had a great week," said Elias Camacho '14, who traveled to Vermont with the "Kids Helping Kids Group," and worked with fellow teenagers at the Kurn Hattin School. "I got to get to know students from here that I might not have spent that much time with before."

The school community gathered in McEvoy Theater on Saturday morning to view three movies produced during the week. Making a Sci-Fi Movie, Project Flight, and Making a Mockumentary each presented their finished products before the entire school celebrated their experiences at the Project Week Symposium.
