The NHS community spent a productive and festive day focused on the arts on Thursday, May 8.
“How often do you get publicly recognized for your personal vision, your originality, your problem solving skills, your innovation or individuality?” said Amy Wilson P'16, Director of Visual and Performing Arts. “The key is to take risks, to push your knowledge and your skills far beyond what you think you are capable of. This is what Arts Day is all about.”
Arts Day started with the annual Arts Awards. In an efficient and professional showcase the community celebrated both visual and performing artists, their growth in skills and expression and their most significant achievements. Throughout the day, students participated in morning and afternoon workshops. Students and faculty were able to choose from 41 different classes, led by visiting artists, faculty, current parents and students. Workshops ranged from “Bodies in Motion: Drawing the Human Figure” with current parent Michelle Murray P'15; “Introduction to Studio Lighting” with visiting artist Scott Bulger; “Jam Session with Rich Ortiz,” a visiting artist from Saratoga, New York; “Cyanotype Printing”; and “Designing a Portfolio Website” with current students. Over the lunch hour there was a celebration of student art in the Galletly Gallery, and a concert on the patio by singer/songwriter Rich Ortiz. On this rare, warm and sunny spring day, the community enjoyed a moment’s respite.
It was a lovely day to de-stress from the end-of-year exams and find new ways to be creative. The energy was powerful. View photos from the day.
