Coding and Programming Highlight Seven New Courses for Next Year

The New Hampton School curriculum remains the critical foundation of the academic experience for all our learners.  So it is no surprise that each year, faculty, department heads, and the Academic Office create an opportunity for renewal and  join forces to add new courses that will enhance the learning opportunities for New Hampton School Students. The School is thrilled to announce a number of new offerings for the 2014-2015 academic year. They include Coding, CAD with 3D Printing, Robotics, Agroecology, Creative Writing, Integrated Mathematics, and Leadership.

“This is further evidence of the spirit of innovation and commitment to growth at New Hampton School,” said Director of Studies Matt Fisk. “These new courses will give our students the knowledge and skills they need to be innovators themselves. They are also a great example of the teaching faculty’s commitment to include relevant, authentic learning in curriculum design.”

The new courses are a response to the School’s quest to identify the most important skills students will need to be successful in college and in a world that continues to demand agile learners.

Among the new offerings in the Science Department is the semester-long Coding Class. This will serve as an introduction to computer programming. The goal of the course is to develop in students the computational practices of algorithm development. 3D Printing with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is a course focused on fundamental three-dimensional drawing techniques, the design process, and 3D printing. Robotics will provide a physical application of the programming and problem solving skills acquired in the Coding class.

Agroecology, the study of ecological processes that operate in agricultural production systems, will utilize the new Greenhouse that NHS students and faculty began constructing during Project Week. It will be offered in the second semester in 2014-15 and in the first semester in 2015-16.

The English department will introduce a semester-long Creative Writing Class which students will be able to take in the first and second semester. The course will allow student to pursue their passion for writing in an environment geared toward learner-driven creativity and skill development.

The Integrated Math Class will be offered to ninth graders, and serves as an example of a shifting math curriculum that will better integrate the different math disciplines. This aligns with the methodology of the International Baccalaureate program.

A Leadership course will be an addition to the history department and will be offered in the second semester. This course will be a great opportunity for students to mix experiential learning in the school community with the more philosophical and technical aspects of developing leadership skills. The course will utilize the wisdom of community members as study historical and contemporary leaders in a case study approach.
