Sochi Bound: Drew '11 Named to U.S. Winter Olympics Team

The post on her Facebook fan page was simple and succinct with no attempt to draw fanfare. A native of Andover, Massachusetts and a member of New Hampton's Class of 2011, Annalisa Drew '11 has always been grounded, except when she is twisting through the air on her skis as a freestyle skier.

"I'm so honored and excited to be a part of TEAM USA in Sochi!" Drew wrote. "GO USA"

According to a story in the Lawrence Eagle Tribune, Drew "was chosen as a coach’s discretionary pick to the U.S. Olympic half-pipe team."

She will compete on February 20, in Sochi, Russia.

Drew's mother told the paper that the family was bracing for a decision.

“We were a little nervous. It can go either way,” said her mother, Lisa Drew. “It’s a judging sport. She got a call from her coach (Monday) but we weren’t allowed to say anything until it was official. It was official (yesterday afternoon). She was ecstatic. The waiting process was incredibly painful. This is awesome. It’s totally incredible.”

Drew, who was a figure skater as a kid and played varsity women's soccer at NHS, currently trains in Vail, Colorado, and balances her training with online classes. The Eagle Tribune said Drew is one of the most athletic performers in the sport. "She has executed an alley-oop flatspin 540 (degree spin) and is in select company with her 1080s, which are three complete revolutions. At the X Games, she attempted a 1260."

Drew's recent finishes included eighth at the Dew Tour, fifth at Copper, fifth in Breckenridge, Colo., and she took two fourths in Park City, Utah, this past weekend.
