At New Hampton School, we contribute to the students’ sense of self and community through cooperative, comprehensive, and specialized instruction in music. This approach infuses the skills, knowledge, and character into the New Hampton School’s philosophically advanced global curriculum and insures that the school will stay on the cutting edge of secondary private education in the country.

Music Courses
Currently, there are eight course offerings. An audition may be required for the advanced ensembles. In all classes, musical academics are taught as they pertain to the topic or current project.
  • Chorus
  • Jazz Band
  • Instrumental Stage Ensemble
  • Beginning Guitar
  • Beginning Piano
  • Music Theory and Composition
  • Making Music with MIDI
  • Audio Production
A fully-equipped recording studio is available to all classes to be used as a diagnostic tool to track progress and/or to create a professional quality recording.

Independent Study
Students who wish to earn credit through Independent Study must first submit a proposal to the Director of Music and the Academic Dean. Upon approval, an instructor will be assigned and a course of study will be planned. Only the truly motivated and self-disciplined student will be allowed to earn credit in this manner.

Arts Foundation
Music is one of six Arts courses offered in a rotation known as Arts Foundation. Comprised of mostly freshmen, this course gives an overview of music at New Hampton School. Utilizing hands-on instrumental and/or vocal instruction mixed with music history, theory and composition, this class allows the musician and the non-musician a chance to sample music at New Hampton, and to perhaps ignite a passion for music.

Extra-Curricular Activities
In addition to all that is offered during the Academic Day, New Hampton School has after-school opportunities for the student musician.
  • Musician’s Workshop, offered in the Fall and Winter, provides a venue for daily solo practice, and the chance to form ensembles and to perform.
  • In the Spring, the Pit Band, a group of students chosen by the instructor, works closely with the Theatre department and provides live accompaniment to the musical theatre production. Rehearsal runs from late March through mid-May.
  • Private Lessons are available on a variety of instruments. These are arranged on an individual basis and require a fee.
  • Classes and ensembles can travel off-campus to listen to professional and semi-professional ensembles.
  • The student musician may participate in state-wide and district festivals. These may require extensive preparation and an audition.  Festivals include:Jazz All State; All State Orchestra, Band and Chorus; All New England Choral Festival;
    and Solo and Ensemble Festival.
