Graphic design, or more simply, visual literacy, is an essential tool in effective communication. New Hampton School's facilities house the latest computer technology and worldwide standard design software, Adobe Creative Suite, which includes Photoshop, InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and more. Students learn the basic elements of two-dimensional design through both computer and more traditional media (sketchbook work with pencils and paint). Graphic Design I and II approach the new medium of digital technology as an additional form of human expression.

In addition to developing a sensitivity to form, students will learn processes for analyzing and logically solving problems. They will learn clarity of communication in verbal, written, and rendering skills for description, persuasion, and education. They will gain an understanding of effective organization for visual imagery and typography. They will develop the ability to understand the strengths, weaknesses, and potential in media messages presented to them through mass media.

Student projects include but are not limited to logo design, event posters, advertisements, catalog, and magazine design. Students learn page layout and image manipulation using InDesign and Photoshop software. Students complete their course work in a dedicated Macintosh publications lab.
