Basketball M-VA
The Men's Varsity A Basketball Team is a unique program among high schools which is highly recognized as one of the best among prep schools. It is an elite team that attracts top student-athletes from all over the country and the world. Each year, these young men come to New Hampton School in order to improve themselves physically, emotionally, and mentally. The "A" program also is comprised of NHS students who have worked their way up through the ranks, to develop their basketball skills, teamwork, and status as a scholar-athlete in this high-exposure program.
The Varsity A team plays a 30-game schedule against tough competitors. They take on top Class A prep schools, such as Worcester Academy, The Winchendon School, and Maine Central Institute. The A team also takes on college teams, including Harvard University JV and The Williams College JV. In the last ten years, The New Hampton Huskies have won two New England Championships. In addition to winning the New England Class A Championships, the Huskies have won the New Hampton Tourney six times as well as winning the prestigious Fork Union Tournament three times.
Husky Basketball has a strong tradition of sending its athletes to play at the next level. Rashad McCants ('02) enjoyed a successful career at UNC where he and Wes Miller ('02) won a national Championship in 2005. Bernard Robinson ('00) graduated in four years from the University of Michigan and is now playing for the Charlotte Bobcats. Tom Coverdale('99) and Michael Roberts('00) both graduated from University of Indiana. Other Huskies have enjoyed playing time at Oregon State, Missouri, Marquette, South Carolina, and Kansas to name a few.
The NBA hosts former Huskies, too. Darius Songaila ('98)was the 2002 Boston Celtics 2nd-round draft pick who is now playing with the Washington Wizards. Bernard Robinson('00) is enjoying his third year in the NBA playing for the Charlotte Bobcats. Rashad McCants('00) was a lottery pick for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Awvee Storey('97) is in his second year with the Washington Wizards and Lawrence Moten ('91) played for the Vancouver Grizzlies in the late nineties.
Beyond basketball, athletes in the Varsity A program are expected to maintain quality GPAs and effort averages. They take on leadership positions in the dorm and have continuous discussions of character and sportsmanship, because being a good athlete doesn’t mean anything unless players can use those skills to make a difference in the world.
