NHS knocks off Bridgton, 79-75
2/14/2009
New Hampton defeated Bridgton Academy Friday night at Smith Gymnasium, 79-75, behind a 26 point effort from Fordham-commit Chris Gaston (Jersey City, NJ). Gaston was one of four HUSKIES to reach double figures. Bentley University-commit Mike Topercer (Phoenix, AZ) scored 16 points, including 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Junior Evan Smotrycz (Reading, MA) and Oral Roberts-bound forward Damen Bell-Holter (Hydaburg, AK) scored 13 and 12 points respectively.
Despite only scoring a combined 6 points New Hampton received huge lifts from Kyle Odister (Sacramento, CA) and junior Eric Dean (Gulford, NH). While lead guard Jordan Callahan (Marietta, GA) sat with two fouls in the first half, Odister, who is committed to Cal-Poly, came up with 4 timely steals and guided NHS to a 1 point advantage at the half. Dean continues to do all the "little things". The contributions made by Dean and guys like uncommitted forward John Daniels (Sioux City, IA) don't usually appear on a stat sheet, but they are what has enabled New Hampton to win 9 of their last 13 games.
Bridgton is currently ranked 5th in the National Prep School Poll. New Hampton will now turn their focus to Monday's game with Class A foe Winchendon. Rescheduled from 1/28, tip-off is scheduled for 5:00.

New Hampton comes up short against Patterson, 58-72
2/8/2009
NHS' varsity A basketball team was defeated by the Patterson School, who is ranked #1 nationally, 58-72. Due to the absence of Damen Bell-Holter for the third straight game, it was difficult for the HUSKIES to compete as frontline players Chris Gaston and Evan Smotrycz watched from the bench with three fouls each in the first half. While Gaston and Smotrycz sat the Bulldogs were able to stretch a 6 point lead to 12 by halftime. Foul trouble was compounded by shooting a wretched 5-20 from the floor in the first half.
Gaston and Smotrycz scored 17 and 13 points respectively. In the second half the HUSKIES competed hard but were never able to get closer than 6 points.
NHS will travel to Wolfboro, NH to take on Class A Champs Brewster Academy Wednesday evening.
Gaston and Smotrycz lead HUSKIES over Massanutten, 79-67
2/8/2009
When Chris Gaston and Evan Smotrycz perform
the way they did today then New Hampton is very difficult to beat. Gaston
in particular was outstanding. The Fordham bound forward made 14 of his
17 shots from the floor en route to a 31 point performance as he showed
tremendous creativity and body control finishing plays within 10 feet of the
rim. While Smotrycz finished with 18 points & 10 rebounds, how he got
those numbers were even more impressive. He knocked down a one-dribble
step-back three-pointer, went to the low block and showed a polished jump hook,
got to the rim off the dribble a few times, and even rebounded in
traffic. Also notable was role player extraordinaire Eric Dean whose
impact doesn’t always show up on the stat sheet but who brings the defensive
presence, physicality, and toughness to solidify New Hampton’s bench.
